Julian offered two hundred thousand dollars for his newborn twin sons

Julian offered two hundred thousand dollars for his newborn twin sons

The white plastic wristband around my left arm was pulled tight enough to pinch the skin, its black printed ink spelling out Room 304 in faded block letters.

At nine hundred dollars a night, this private corner of St. Jude Hospital smelled of nothing but institutional floor wax and the bitter, burnt scent of cold coffee in paper cups.

I sat upright in the vinyl wheelchair, my core aching from the fresh surgical stitches, holding my newborn twin sons close to my chest.

Leo lay against my left shoulder, his tiny fingers curled into the blue flannel of my gown, while Oliver rested on my right arm, his breathing a faint, rhythmic puff against my neck.

The nurse, a quiet woman named Martha who had been on shift since dawn, knelt by my side to check the IV line running into the back of my hand.

“Your blood pressure is settling, Clara,” Martha said, her voice barely louder than the hum of the hospital ventilation fan overhead.

“But you need at least twelve hours of complete stillness before we can discuss discharge.”

I adjusted my glasses with my free thumb, my eyes scanning the room, landing on the green leather binder sitting inside my canvas tote bag near the closet.

The heavy wooden door swung open without a knock, the sudden movement pushing a draft of cold hallway air into our quiet space.

Julian walked in first, his custom-tailored navy suit jacket unbuttoned, his gold watch gleaming under the harsh fluorescent lights as he checked the time.

Sienna followed close behind him, her high heels clicking sharply on the linoleum, her fingers twisting her large diamond engagement ring around and around.

Behind them came his mother, Eleanor, her chin tilted upward as she surveyed the small room, her nostrils flaring slightly in distaste.

Arthur, Julian’s father, entered last, his tall frame stooped under a dark wool coat, his quiet eyes fixed on the floor as he rubbed his forehead.

“We require some privacy, nurse,” Julian said, his voice flat and arrogant, not once looking at the two infants in my arms.

Martha looked at me, her hand pausing on the blood pressure cuff, waiting to see if I would protest.

I gave her a small, reassuring nod, keeping my expression entirely vacant, the picture of an exhausted, broken woman.

“I will be at the nurses’ station if you need me, Clara,” Martha said, her rubber-soled shoes making no sound as she slipped past the Vance family.

The door closed with a soft thud, leaving only the five of us in the small, expensive room.

Julian stepped toward the bedside table, swept a stack of informational brochures onto the floor, and placed a black leather folder in their place.

“You have had thirty hours to think about your future, Clara,” Julian said, checking his watch again with a quick, nervous flick of his wrist.

“We are not going to spend the next year dragging our name through the family courts.”

Eleanor moved to the foot of my wheelchair, her formal, clipped voice cutting through the space between us like a blade.

“The Vance legacy cannot be held hostage by your stubbornness,” Eleanor said, her chin rising even higher.

“You will sign the custody papers today, or we will ensure you leave this hospital with nothing.”

I kept my head lowered, allowing my shoulders to slump, letting them believe the physical toll of the delivery had stripped away my strength.

“Arthur,” I said, my voice barely a whisper, “do you agree with this?”

Ezoic

Arthur did not look up from the floor, his fingers continuing to rub his forehead as he let out a long, weary sigh.

Julian unzipped the black folder, pulling out three thick copies of a document printed on heavy, cream-colored paper.

“Take two hundred thousand dollars, sign the divorce papers, and give me the twins,” Julian said.

Sienna took a step closer to Julian, her high-pitched voice rising in defense of the offer.

“It is more money than you would ever see in a standard settlement, Clara.”

Ezoic

I stared at the black folder, my mind cataloging the exact phrasing Julian had used, noting how easily he dismissed his own sons as business transactions.

Ezoic

“Two hundred thousand,” I said slowly, pretending to hesitate as I looked at the legal documents.

Ezoic

“And I give up all parental rights?”

“You sign them over to Julian,” Eleanor corrected, her voice formal and cold.

Ezoic

“They will be raised at the family estate, where they belong.”

I reached out with a hand that I forced to look weak, taking the top copy of the agreement from the bedside table.

Ezoic

As I flipped to page four, my eyes bypassed the standard custody language and focused entirely on the financial disclosures.

Julian watched me, his gold watch catching the light again as he tapped his fingers against his thigh.

Under section nine, sub-clause twelve, I spotted the hidden sentence I had been searching for.

It was a mutual release clause, stating that both parties agreed to waive any future audits of all corporate and joint business accounts.
