The receipt was on the kitchen island, tucked under a coffee mug that had left a brown ring on the yellow paper. It was from a jeweler on High Street, dated that morning, for five thousand dollars flat.

Rowan was upstairs in the bedroom, the heavy slide of his closet door scraping against the drywall as he packed.

I picked up the paper, my thumb tracing the neat ink of the transaction. A gold watch.

A sudden, sharp heat bloomed in my lower back, blooming outward until it gripped my abdomen like a tightening iron band. I had to lean against the edge of the quartz counter, my fingers tapping a steady four-beat rhythm against my left wrist.

Rowan came down the stairs carrying his leather weekend bag, his jacket already zipped. He did not look at the counter or at the way I was holding myself.

“The traffic on Interstate Seventy is going to be terrible near Columbus,” he said, checking his wrist. “If I don’t leave now, I’ll miss the reservation for Mom’s dinner.”

“Rowan,” I said, my voice tighter than I wanted it to be. “The doctor said three weeks early is entirely possible. The pressure isn’t stopping.”

He rubbed his left earlobe, his thumb moving in quick, nervous circles. “We talked about this, Phoebe. It’s Braxton Hicks. You had them last Tuesday too.”

“This is different,” I said. “It is five minutes apart.”

“You are overreacting because of the stress,” he said, adjusting his collar as he reached for his car keys on the hook by the door. “Mom has been planning this birthday weekend since January. I can’t just not show up because of a false alarm.”

“I need you to stay,” I said. “I need you to drive me to Saint Jude.”

He stopped with his hand on the doorknob, looking back at me with a thin, tight smile. “I’ll keep my phone on. Call me if the doctor actually tells you to go in. Otherwise, I will see you Sunday evening.”

The latch clicked behind him, and then there was only the quiet hum of the refrigerator.

I stood there for three minutes, waiting for the iron band around my ribs to loosen, but the heat only sharpened.

The taxi driver who picked me up twenty minutes later did not speak. He kept his eyes on the road while I held my stomach in the backseat, watching the streetlights of Oak Ridge blur into long, yellow lines against the glass.

The fare came to twenty-two dollars. I left a thirty-dollar bill on the console and closed the door before he could count the change.

A nurse in blue scrubs was waiting near the glass sliding doors of the Saint Jude maternity ward, holding the handles of a heavy wheelchair.

“First baby?” she asked, her voice low and calm as she guided me into the seat.

“Yes,” I said. “The father is on his way from Columbus.”

She did not comment on the empty taxi departing down the ramp. She pushed me through the double doors, where the quiet of the corridor was broken only by the squeak of her rubber-soled shoes on the linoleum.

In the small triage room, the air was cold enough to make me shiver under the thin cotton gown they gave me.

A digital clock on the wall showed ten past eight.

I took my phone off the bedside table, my hand cold against the screen, and dialed Rowan’s number. It rang four times before the connection cleared.

“Phoebe, I’m almost to Springfield,” Rowan’s voice came through the speaker, fast and impatient. “Is this still about the cramps?”

“They admitted me, Rowan,” I said, holding the edge of the mattress as another wave began. “The nurse said I’m four centimeters. You need to turn the car around.”

There was a brief silence on the other end, followed by the rustle of a heavy wool coat and the sound of a car blinker. Then a different voice cut in, clear and sharp.

“Rowan, don’t let her play these games,” Selina said, her voice loud enough to carry through the microphone from the passenger seat. “Tell her women have been giving birth for thousands of years.”

“Mom, please,” Rowan muttered, though his voice lacked any real weight.

“I am in labor, Rowan,” I said, my voice cracking on the final syllable.

“Phoebe, look,” Rowan said, his tone shifting into the defensive, fast-talking explanation he used when he was cornered. “The doctor at your last appointment said we had time. If I turn around now, we lose the deposit on the restaurant, and Mom’s weekend is ruined over a standard delivery. The nurses are there.”

“You are my husband,” I said.

“And I will be there on Sunday,” he said. “Just do what the doctors tell you.”

The call ended with a flat click, leaving only the dial tone before the screen went black.

I stared at the black glass of the phone, my thumb hovering over the screen, before I scrolled down to a contact name I had not touched in two years.
