Forty years of marriage ended with a forged signature on a medical robotics contract
The text arrived while I was looking at a small grease stain on the sleeve of my gray sweatshirt. It was eighty-four degrees outside, but the air conditioning in my Cambridge apartment kept the kitchen cold enough that the coffee in my mug had already gone lukewarm.
The message was from my mother.
“We decided it would be best if you skipped the dinner tonight, sweetheart. We don’t want things to feel awkward.”
I sat at the small wooden table and watched the cursor blink.
For forty years, my parents had polished their lives like silver spoons, and for the last ten of those years, I had been the dent they tried to turn toward the wall.

I typed back a single word.
“Okay.”
I set the phone face down.
The gray sweatshirt was one my mother had tried to throw away three times during my college years, claiming the frayed cuffs made me look like an unpaid assistant. I had kept it because the cotton was thick enough to block the draft from the laboratory vents.
By eleven, the heat outside was rising off the asphalt in Waltham.
In the second-floor lab at Northstar, the air smelled of solder and isopropyl alcohol.
“Run the diagnostic on the elbow actuator again,” I said to Sarah, our lead engineer.
Sarah tapped her tablet, and the carbon-fiber prototype arm on the test bench hummed, its artificial joint flexing seventy-two degrees before stopping with a soft click.

“It is still catching on the return sleeve,” Sarah said.
“We need to adjust the tolerance by two microns,” I said, leaning closer to inspect the tiny gears.
My phone lit up on the bench next to a tray of stainless steel screws.
It was an automated calendar reminder for the fortieth anniversary dinner at the Ashford Hotel, scheduled for seven o’clock.
I tapped the screen and selected delete.
“Are we still on track for the regulatory filing next month?” Sarah asked.
“Yes,” I said. “The distribution contract is locked.”
Sarah looked up, her expression curious. “I saw the press release draft this morning. Is it true about the distribution deal?”
